In early January, most entertainment handicappers are sharpening their pencils for award season. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences should have their nomination ceremony next Monday.
That’s not going to happen. Neither will the Grammy Awards. The Grammy Awards was the first big entertainment trophy ceremony scheduled to take place in 2021. Grammy producers had set the date for January 31. But due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Grammy’s have had to reschedule.
Check out updates on both the Grammy Awards and the Academy Awards so you can get all set to make your bets against their Entertainment odds. Both ceremonies will happen in 2021. It’s a matter of when they happen.
63rd Grammy Awards and 93rd Academy Awards Update
Grammy’s pushed out at least two months
On January 5, Grammy organizers decided to push out the event to at least March. The Grammy’s made the decisions based on the COVID case surge in Los Angeles County. The event was supposed to happen at the Staples Center, home of the Lakers, Kings, and Clippers, on January 31.
Because no fans can attend the red carpet ceremony, and because nominees are hesitant to show up in a closed space for hours, the awards won’t happen until late March at the earliest. By late March, hopefully, the surge will have subsided.
If it doesn’t, there isn’t much anyone can do. Nobody wants a virtual awards ceremony like the ones in 2020.
At least odds on MyBookie won’t change much due to the delay. It’s not as if Taylor Swift’s odds to win Album of the Year for Folklore, -260 the last time MyBookie had GA odds, will suddenly rise to +100 because the ceremony won’t happen until the spring.
Academy Awards rescheduled for late April
The Academy pushed their awards show out to April 25. Years ago, the Academy Awards happened on the last Monday of March or the first Monday of April. In fact, in some years the awards show competed with the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament National Championship.
The Academy Awards have happened on a Sunday for at least the past 22 years. April 25 this year is a Sunday. So, the Academy is keeping that tradition.
When MyBookie releases updated odds for the 93rd Academy Awards, Viola Davis in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom will offer much less than the +500 we could have gotten for backing the best thespian on the planet in October.
Davis should win the golden eunuch. Andra Day, who plays Billie Holiday in the United States vs. Billie Holiday, is Davis’ only real competition. If the odds are right, Viola still deserves backing even though she will be the chalk.
Chadwick Boseman may offer favorite’s odds to win best actor. He plays Levee, Ma Rainey’s counter-point in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Boseman, who passed away in 2020 at 43 due to cancer, gives a stunning performance. He’s got strong competition, stronger than Viola’s, but he should get the award no problem.
Keep checking MyBookie for odds. The Golden Globes happen before both the Grammy Awards and the Academy Awards this year. MyBookie should soon post odds for the GGs in the entertainment category.
