Although we’re still seeing games postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the college basketball season still keeps moving along. Following a weekend where we saw a lot of high profile games, things slow down a little to start the week. On Monday, January 4th, we will only see one game involving a ranked opponent. On Tuesday, January 5th, we’ll see six games involving ranked teams, but only one of those six will pit two ranked teams against each other. Even though we’re still seeing games postponed due to the coronavirus, the numbers seem to be going down, so hopefully that trend will continue. Let’s preview the upcoming action for the next couple of days in the world of NCAA Basketball so you can get all set to continue placing your bets against their College Basketball odds.
NCAA Basketball COVID-19 Update – January 5th Edition
The Monday, January 4th slate of games doesn’t have a lot of sexy matchups. In the one game of the night involving a ranked team, as Bob Huggins’ West Virginia Mountaineers travel to Stillwater, Oklahoma to take on the Cowboys of Oklahoma State. Oklahoma State features one of the top freshman, and a potential top pick in the upcoming NBA Draft, in Cade Cunningham. The Cowboys are off to a 7-2 start, and are looking to make waves in the Big 12.
West Virginia comes into this one with an 8-3 mark. They lost a tight one at Oklahoma on Saturday, so the Mountaineers will be looking to get back on track. West Virginia lost one of their top players over the weekend, as big man Oscar Tshiebwe announced that he was stepping away from basketball for personal reasons. Tshiebwe was one of the top offensive rebounders in the country, so he will be missed.
This should be a fun matchup. West Virginia always guards hard, and will try to keep Oklahoma State out of the paint. The Cowboys are poor shooters from beyond the arc, so they will need to find a way to manufacture some points. Oklahoma State will need to play as physical as possible, as they’ll need to keep West Virginia off of the glass.
On January 5th, we’ll see more action involving ranked teams. In the premier matchup of the evening, the #14 Rutgers Scarlet Knights will travel to East Lansing to take on the Michigan State Spartans. This one could have huge ramifications on the Big 10 race, as both of these teams were picked to finish at or near the top of the Big 10 standings.
In other action on Tuesday, Kansas State will travel to Texas Tech to take on the Red Raiders. Iowa State will take on the surging Texas Longhorns, Missouri will travel to Starkville to play the Mississippi State Bulldogs, and the Kansas Jayhawks who are coming off of a blowout loss at home to Texas will travel to take on the Horned Frogs of TCU.
The status of the Villanova at DePaul game is up in the air, but more than likely will be postponed, as Villanova’s Jay Wright announced that he had contracted the coronavirus. This will be tough for DePaul, as their game scheduled with St. Johns on Sunday was also postponed due to COVID issues within the St. John’s program.
