14-day quarantine for Australian Open players confirmed
Last week, Australia’s Chief Health Officer endorsed Tennis Australia’s COVID-safe plan. The most important piece to the plan is the 14-day quarantine.
Players have to make travel arrangements. Before Tennis Australia confirmed that the CHO backed up a two-week quarantine period, some of the best in the world, including Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka and Rafael Nadal, were sitting on their hands wondering when they had to arrive in Melbourne so that they could play at the Aussie Open.
That wasn’t fair to players. Now that the powers that be have confirmed the 14-day quarantine, players can arrive in Melbourne the week of January 18 to ensure they get out of quarantine in time for the Australian Open’s February 8 start date.
Those wanting to push the envelope can wait until January 26 to land down under. Don’t expect Rafa, Novak, Serena and Naomi to push that envelope. All four want to ensure they have the best chance of winning the Australian Open. Doing so means taking at least a week out of quarantine to prepare.
Federer to miss the Aussie Open
One star player who won’t head to Melbourne is Roger Federer. FedEx is still recovering from a couple of knee operations.
Although Roger said he won’t play in Australia, it’s not because he can’t play. Federer made it clear that he’s healthy enough to step onto the court. But he’s not one-hundred percent and like most top athletes in their sport, FedEx doesn’t want to give it a go until he is one-hundred percent.
In what tournament will Roger likely make his debut? Federer, by far, has had the most success over Wimbledon’s grass courts. Roger could sit on the bench until the Nature Valley International in June.
The NVI is the tune-up tournament for Wimbledon. FedEx requires just one tournament to get ready for a major like Wimbledon. So don’t be surprised if he rests the right knee until his best Grand Slam event rolls around.
Nagal and Murray secure Australian Open wildcard berths
Sumit Nagal secured the Australian Open wildcard from the Asia-Pacific Region. Nagal won his first ever major tournament match at the 2020 U.S. Open when he beat Bradley Klahn 6-1, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in the first round. Nagal lost to U.S. Open winner Dominic Thiem in the second round.
Andy Murray also nabbed an Aussie Open wildcard berth. Murray had hip surgery in 2019. He won a title, the Antwerp, 7 months later, but like so many tennis players in 2020, failed to regain his form after the COVID shutdown.
MyBookie has yet to establish odds on Andy Murray. No matter what the odds are, if Andy is at the top of his game, he’ll outplay them.
Consider strategic future bets for 2021 majors
MyBookie has produced future bets for the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon, and the U.S. Open. Check out odds and determine if you should make a few bets.
For Wimbledon, Simona Halep at +800 and Roger Federer at +900 stand out. We already discussed why FedEx might key on Wimbledon this year. Simona had a throw away 2020. When she’s healthy and ready to play, she can beat anyone on the planet.
Rafael Nadal at +120 to win the French Open may represent overlay odds. Rafa has won the French Open four years in a row. Yes, the greatest player ever on clay can win his fifth in a row in 2021.
One other player to mention is Sofia Kenin. If you believe like we do that Sofia has a breakout year, then play her to win two or even all of the Grand Slam tournaments before the Australian Open.
She’s offering overlay odds in all four majors. So grab the awesome odds on Sofia while they exist.
