Brady takes Bucs back to the playoffs

Tom Brady is back in the playoffs. The New England Patriots aren’t. The biggest story this offseason, other than what the league may do to temper the spread of COVID-19, was who could succeed without the other? Did Terrific Tom make the Patriots? Or did the Patriots create Tom Brady?

The answer, if you believe in zero sum game questions, is that Tom Brady created the Patriots. Brady led the Bucs to a 47-7 Week 16 victory over the Detroit Lions. That secured the Buccaneers spot in the playoffs.

As it stands now, the Bucs will play the NFC East Division winner, which shouldn’t cause Tampa any concern, right? Maybe. The Buccaneers barely beat the Giants on the road, 25-23, and if somehow the Bears or Rams leapfrog the Bucs for the fifth seed, Tampa would have to travel to Seattle or New Orleans.

The Saints squashed the Buccaneers twice in 2020. Seattle appears back on track after a mid-season swoon. Don’t expect the Buccaneers to rest their starters on Sunday against the woeful Atlanta Falcons. This season, when the NFL says every game counts, they mean it.

Browns, Titans, Colts, Ravens and Dolphins in mad scramble for playoffs

The Miami Dolphins, Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns, Tennessee Titans and Indianapolis Colts are 10-5. Either Tennessee or Indianapolis will win the AFC South.

Tennessee is at Houston on January 3. That should be a victory. The Colts host the Jaguars. An Indianapolis win looks like a sure thing.

If Tennessee wins, they win the division. The Colts needs some help. Either the Dolphins, Ravens, or Browns must lose. The Fins play New England. They should beat the Patriots.

The Ravens are at Cincinnati. That looks like a win, which means if the Colts are to make the playoffs, the Cleveland Browns must lose to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Circle that game on your calendars.

Washington Football Team, Dallas Cowboys, and New York Giants remain alive

One of the three worst teams in the NFL, either Washington, Dallas, or the New York Giants will win the NFC East and the fourth seed in the playoffs. Right now, the WFT controls their own destiny.

If the Washington Football Team beats the Philadelphia Eagles, they will have 9 losses, which makes them the outright winner. The Dallas Cowboys are at the New York Giants. One of those teams will eliminate the other.

The WFT – Eagles match happens on Sunday Night Football. So, either the Boys or G-Men will be rooting for Philly to take out Washington.

New NFL Playoff format ends 2-seed’s extra bye

The National Football League has an expanded playoff format this season. The 1-seed in both the AFC and NFC take a week off before starting their playoff pushes. The 2-seeds must now play in the Wildcard Round. That’s great news for the Kansas City Chiefs and Green Bay Packers.

It’s not so great news for teams like the Buffalo Bills, Pittsburgh Steelers, and New Orleans Saints. But teams still want to win the 2-seed so that they mustn’t travel until, possibly, the championship game.

Also, who knows? If the Packers and Chiefs are upset in the Divisional Round, the Saints and Bills or Steelers could be in a prime position to host a championship contest, which is why we shouldn’t expect Buffalo, Pittsburgh, or New Orleans to rest their starters on Sunday.
