Saints fall to Chiefs in second straight loss
There was good and bad for the New Orleans Saints in Week 15. The good news is that Drew Brees returned to the field.
Brees played well. He completed 15-of-34 for 234 yards. He also threw 3 touchdown passes. But the Saints appeared out of sorts on offense for most the game, which is why the Kansas City Chiefs handed New Orleans their second straight loss in a 32-29 victory.
At 10-4, New Orleans is in the playoffs. The Saints want home field or at least the second-seed, though. Home field appears out of reach because the Packers are 11-3. Unless Green Bay loses their next 2 games, the Saints won’t get the 1-seed.
The 2-seed is a real possibility. Seattle must beat the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers in their next couple of games. Even if the Seahawks do, it’s not clear who would win the tie-breaker should the Hawks and Saints finish with the same record.
As for Kansas City, beating one of the best teams in the league on their field speaks volumes. The odds on the Chiefs dropped from +180 to +170. There’s a calmness about Kansas City that we’ve seen before.
The San Francisco 49ers in the 1980s, the Dallas Cowboys in the 1990s, and the Patriots in the 2000s had the same calm. The Chiefs don’t panic. Because they don’t panic, they deserve to be underlay favorites.
Jets upset Rams for first win of the season
Everything looked rosy for the Los Angeles Rams. LAR had overtaken the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC West. A Week 15 victory put them into the playoffs. All they had to do was beat arguably the worst football team in NFL history.
Yep. The Rams couldn’t do it. Somehow, Sam Darnold and the New York Jets scored 23 points against one of the best defenses in the NFL. The best part? NYJ averaged 3 yards per carry.
But Sam Darnold outplayed Jared Goff and the J-E-T-S beat the Rams. Now, Los Angeles is in a battle the last couple of weeks to not just win the NFC West but to also stamp their ticket to the playoffs.
With two weeks left, 22 NFL teams remain eligible for the playoffs
Seattle beat the Washington Football Team. The win, coupled with the Rams loss sends the Seahawks to the playoffs. Seattle could lock up the NFC West with a win against LAR on Sunday.
Both the Seahawks and Bills locked up playoff spots. The Chiefs and Saints locked up spots last week. Other teams who will play after January 3 include the Pittsburgh Steelers and Green Bay Packers.
Those 6 squads have made it. 16 other teams are fighting for the remaining spots, including the Titans, Colts, Rams, Cardinals, Browns, Raiders, and Dolphins. All 4 teams in the ridiculous NFC East remain in the hunt for the division title.
NFL Week 17 is often the time when the best teams rest starters. That’s not likely to happen this season.
