In a press conference last week, Duke Head Coach, and one of the most prominent names in college basketball, Mike Krzyzewski suggested that they shouldn’t be playing college basketball right now due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After these comments, Duke canceled the remainder of it’s non-conference schedule so that Blue Devil players would be able to go home and see their families over the holiday season.
While some coaches agreed with Coach K’s statements, others contended that the student-athletes wanted to play and needed to play. As of now, the season keeps rolling along, as it would take a catastrophic event for the NCAA to cancel the season. Let’s have a look at the latest NCAA Basketball news out there so you can continue betting against their College Basketball odds.
NCAA Basketball COVID-19 Update – December 15th Edition
If more and more of the top programs keep losing games to COVID-19 issues, we may see more and more people take a stance against playing. Over the past few days, the ACC, Big 12, and the Atlantic 10 have all been affected by the virus. Top-name programs Baylor and Louisville have had to pause basketball activities due to positive tests. Xavier, Duquesne, St. Francis of Pennsylvania, and Evansville have also had to cancel games. Kansas was scheduled to play Tarleton State last Saturday, but Tarleton State had a player test positive and the game was canceled.
Conference Season Arrives
This week is a big week in the college basketball world, as many of the top conferences start conference play. The Big 10, Big East, ACC, and the AAC all start their slate of conference matchups. We should see some exciting basketball in the upcoming days.
On Tuesday, December 15th, we’ll see some very competitive conference games. In the ACC, Clemson will travel to Blacksburg to take on the 15th-rated Hokies of Virginia Tech. Clemson has started the season off 5-0, as many experts are saying that this is the best Clemson team that has played for head coach Brad Brownell. Clemson already has wins over Alabama, Purdue, Maryland, and Mississippi State.
Virginia Tech is also having a very good start to the season. The Hokies have started the season 4-1, with their lone loss coming to Penn State in the Big 10-ACC Challenge. Coach Mike Young’s squad owns an impressive victory over Villanova earlier this season.
Big Ten Clash
In a Big 10 opener for both teams, the Minnesota Golden Gophers will travel to Champaign, Illinois to take on the #6 University of Illinois Fighting Illini. The Illini have two losses on the season, but those have come to Baylor and Missouri. Both of those teams should be in the NCAA Tournament this season. The Illini have one of the most talented rosters in the country, and should be a contender for the Big 10 championship. Led by preseason All-American Ayo Dosunmu, the Illini play an up-tempo style and put up a lot of points.
The Gophers come into Champaign with a 6-0 record. Although they haven’t had a very tough start to the season, the Gophers are always a challenge in conference play. Richard Pitino’s squad lost a lot of players from last year’s team, so Minnesota is somewhat in rebuilding mode. This game will tell the Gophers how much work they have left to do in a rebuilding year.
