NCAA Football COVID-19 Update – November 30th Edition
2020 NCAAF Fall Season
Ohio State cancels a game, hurting their championship hopes
Once the Ohio State Buckeyes stepped onto the field, they immediately became a top three choice to win the title. Those plans seriously derailed last week because the Buckeyes, who won’t play as many games as teams from the SEC, Big 12, or ACC, had to cancel a matchup against the Illinois Illini.
COVID-19 hit the Buckeyes in the worst possible way. Their head coach came down with the virus along with three players and some staff. No doubt, the Buckeyes would have cruised to a victory against the Illini.
But the game versus Illinois was the second that Ohio State couldn’t play. The number three ranked team in the nation didn’t get a chance to take on Maryland and Taulia Tagovailoa on Nov. 14, either.
If Ohio State wins their next couple of games, they can march into the Big Ten Championship. A win in the Big Ten title matchup gives them seven wins. However, the Buckeyes will have beaten just two ranked teams, and neither will be ranked in the Top 10.
Is that resume better than an undefeated Cincinnati or BYU squad? Both of which will have 11 or 12 victories?
Maybe. Maybe not. Not only that, but the Florida Gators are likely to have two losses, one of which will come against Alabama in the SEC Championship. The Texas A&M Aggies could finish their season with a single loss.
Ohio State, because of how the Big Ten handled he coronavirus pandemic, could be left out of the College Football Playoff this season.
Notre Dame, Clemson, Alabama, Texas A&M and Florida dominate
The five teams that have the best shots of making the CFP all proved their worthiness in Week 13. Notre Dame started the chalk fest by covering and dominating a decent but overmatched North Carolina Tar Heels squad.
The Irish entered halftime tied with the Heels at 17 points each. The Golden Domers dominated the second half to walk out of Chapel Hill with a 31-17 win. At 9-0, Notre Dame has a seriously impressive resume.
Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence got back onto the football field and showed why he’s a lock to go with the first pick in next April’s NFL Draft. Lawrence led the Tigers to a 52-17 win against Pittsburgh.
Both Texas A&M and Florida won big. The Aggies beat LSU 20-7 while the Gators cruised to a 34-10 win against Kentucky.
Alabama, the best team in college football, dominated rival Auburn 42-13 in the Iron Bowl. The Tide take on LSU in a make up game on Dec. 5 before playing in the SEC Championship. Bama beat Auburn with Nick Saban out do to a coronavirus positive.
Notre Dame hosts Syracuse, Clemson takes on Virginia Tech, A&M battles Auburn, and Florida is at Tennessee. Expect Texas A&M versus Auburn to determine whether the Aggies stay in the Top 5 on the CFP Rankings. If Ohio State can’t play Michigan State on Saturday, their dreams are over.
Have a great week!
