Medvedev wins the Nitto ATP Finals
Daniil Medvedev won all five of his matches to take his first Nitto ATP Finals. Medvedev started out hot, beating 1-seed Novak Djokovic 6-3, 6-3.
Then after taking down Alexander Zverev and Diego Schwartzman, Medvedev sent the great Rafael Nadal home after a 3-6, 7-6, 6-3 victory. Daniil beat rival Dominic Thiem in the ATP Finals championship to secure the trophy.
What’s interesting is how Medvedev lost the first set to both Nadal and Thiem, who were both seeded higher than he was, before rallying for the win. It’s a huge victory for Daniil, who has spent the last couple of years working to reach the Federer, Djokovic, Nadal level.
The ATP Finals win shows that he not only can hang with two of the Big Three, but he can also beat them. 2021 should be one of the most interesting on the ATP in a long time if Medvedev can keep it up.
Djokovic, Nadal, Federer, Medvedev, and Thiem favorites to win 2021 Australian Open
If the oddsmakers are right, the 2021 Australian Open on the men’s side will be the most competitive in recent memory. Yes, Novak Djokovic is a major favorite at +110. But anybody who has watched Djoker perform in the major tournaments this year knows those odds are likely to drift.
Rafal Nadal, Dominic Thiem, Roger Federer, and Daniil Medvedev are all within +100 of each other on the odds board. Rafa is the +500 second choice while Thiem, Federer, and Medvedev are all at+600.
If tennis handicappers can look past Djokovic, they can get decent odds on any other player. Daniil proved over the weekend that he can hang with the Big Three. Thiem has a decent record against Rafa. Who knows? 2021 could be a changing of the guard on the ATP.
Andreescu favored on women’s side to win the first tennis major next year
At +700 odds, most expect Bianca Andreescu to win the singles title at the 2021 Australian Open. Bianca isn’t alone, though.
Serena Williams and Ashleigh Barty both offer +800 odds. Naomi Osaka is at +900 while Simona Halep and Sofia Kenin are both at +1000. Even Garbine Muguruza can be considered a favorite.
Muguruza offers +1200 odds. Like in most years the first WTA’s first major championship is deep with contenders.
Have a great rest of your week!
