NCAA Football COVID-19 Update – November 23rd Edition
Even though there have been issues, the NCAA and the FBS have continued to plug along.
This past weekend, 15 FBS games were either canceled or postponed due to issues with the virus. Five games that involved ranked teams were postponed, while one game involving a ranked team was canceled. The PAC 12, ACC, Big 10, Big 12, and the SEC were all affected by the cancelations and postponements.
Some of the major stories from the weekend included coaches, as University of Miami head coach Manny Diaz, and Louisiana head coach Billy Napier both tested positive. University of Tennessee Athletic Director and former head football coach Phillip Fulmer also tested positive for COVID-19. Washington State and Stanford had to cancel their game due to the fact that Washington State was so depleted by the virus that they couldn’t even put the bare minimum of 53 scholarship players on the field to play. All in all, it was a rough weekend on the college football scene.
One particular game that garnered a lot of attention was the Clemson at Florida State contest. The game was postponed just hours prior to kickoff. Clemson had arrived in Tallahassee on Friday and were prepared to play. Medical personnel from both teams could not mutually agree upon moving forward, thus the game was postponed. Clemson had brought a player with them who had shown symptoms of COVID, but had tested negative all week. The player then tested positive on Friday night after the team had already arrived in Tallahassee.
After the game was postponed players from both teams took to Twitter to call each other out. Trevor Lawrence claimed that Florida State was trying to get out of the game, as they were severely outmatched. The Seminoles were 35-point underdogs in this one. Florida State players tweeted back that they weren’t scared of Clemson.
On Sunday, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney got involved in the mudslinging, as he blamed the Florida State administration for canceling the game. He said that Clemson had followed the proper procedures, and there would not be any issues with playing the game. Florida State says they want to reschedule the game, but Swinney isn’t buying it.
The travel cost for Clemson to travel to Tallahassee was over $300,000. Swinney stated that unless Florida State reimbursed Clemson that money, that he had no interest in playing the game. There are issues related to rescheduling the game, and both schools were going to meet with the ACC this week to discuss the issues.
COVID-19 has put a damper on this college football season, and will probably continue to cause issues going forward. Even though this season has had it’s struggles, at least some sort of football is being played.
