With the 2020-21 PGA Tour season rolling right along as we get set for the quickly approaching 2020 Masters Championship, it’s time to take a look at the latest developments as far as it pertains to the ongoing – and growing – COVID-19 pandemic currently sweeping its way across the United States. With that said, let get right to it so you can keep planning your bets against our Masters odds.
PGA Tour Betting | COVID-19 Update As 2020 Masters Approaches
Will any big name golfers miss the Masters because of a positive test result? Are there any players that have already tested positive that are in danger of missing out on the biggest and most prestigious tournament in all of professional golf?
Could a positive test result – and the accompanying COVID-19 protocols regarding contract tracing – result in some other players being quarantined out of an abundance of caution? Let’s find out right now.
This week’s 2020 Bermuda Championship represents the first PGA Tour event that has allowed fans to be present since the opening round of the Players Championship in mid-March. Bermuda has had just 188 total cases of coronavirus and reports just three current known cases. Still, the tournament is enforcing strict guidelines that allow a maximum of 500 spectators on the grounds at Port Royal Golf Course each tournament day.
Anyone at the event must be tested seven days before arriving, then tested again upon arrival on the island while staying in their hotel room until receiving a negative test result. Masks are also required for anyone in attendance.
“We were lucky the Bermudian government and the health team here have kept the island safe,” said tournament director Sean Sovacool. “We were able to get the tour comfortable [with the idea of having fans] and their protocols matched with Bermuda’s.”
The PGA Tour has not allowed fans since its return from a three-month hiatus in June. The 2020 PGA Championship and U.S. Open were played without spectators and the upcoming Masters won’t allow fans to be in attendance as well. The upcoming Houston Open will allow fans on site, with a capacity set at 2,000 fans per day. However. not everyone is happy about fans being in attendance in Houston.
“For me personally, I don’t like the risk that having that happen the week before the Masters,” Phil Mickelson said last week. “I just feel like the week before the Masters, like that’s a big tournament we have and I just don’t want to have any risk heading in there. “It has made me question whether or not I’ll play there.”
Now, let’s take a look at which players have recently tested positive.
Since the 2020 season resumed at the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas back in June, 13 players and two caddies have tested positive for the virus. The first player to test positive for COVID-19 was Nick Watney at the RBC Heritage on June 19. Most recently, world No. 15 Adam Scott tested positive on Oct. 21 in pre-tournament screening prior to the Zozo Championship at Sherwood. Scott who last competed at the U.S. Open in September, is now in self-isolation.
“While it’s difficult news to receive – as I really looked forward to playing this week – my focus now is on recovery for the final stretch of the fall,” said Scott.
Several other players including Brooks Koepka, Webb Simpson and Bud Cauley have tested negative for the virus, but chose to withdraw from events as a precaution after playing in groups or being in close proximity to affected players.
Here is a look at the positive cases week-by-week on the PGA Tour, starting in September:
- Sept. 13: Scottie Scheffler in pre-tournament screening
- Sept. 14: Sam Horsfield in pre-tournament screening
- Oct. 6: Tony Finau in pre-tournament screening
- Oct. 13: Dustin Johnson in pre-tournament screening
- Oct. 21: Adam Scott in pre-tournament screening
The bottom line for golf fans, the PGA Tour’s players and golf betting buffs everywhere is that nothing is assured in today’s pandemic-dominated times. Any player, whether a journeyman – or a superstar – could test positive at a moment’s notice.
