Men’s Tennis Tournaments: Erste Bank Open
Djokovic, Thiem, Tsitsipas and Medvedev the top four seeds
Novak Djokovic returns to the courts for the first time since a three set loss to the King of Clay, Rafael Nadal, at the 2020 French Open Finals. Djoker couldn’t hang with his main rival over Rafa’s favorite surface.
The number one ranked player in the world took about two weeks off before deciding to head to Vienna. Djokovic beat Filip Kajinovic in the first round. Borna Coric, Djoker’s second round opponent, has never beaten Novak. Don’t expect Coric to hang with Novak in his fourth try.
That doesn’t mean Djokovic has an easy path to the Erste Bank Open Finals. 3-seed Stefanos Tsitsipas could stand in Novak’s way. Tsitsipas pushed Djokovic to 5 sets in the French Open Semifinals earlier this month. In 7 head-to-head matches, Djokovic has won four. Stefanos has won three.
That makes Tsitsipas a serious contender to dethrone the world’s number one player before Djoker even makes it to the finals. Let’s hope Stefanos gets to face Novak in the Erste Bank Open Semifinals.
On the other side of the bracket, both 2-seed Dominic Thiem and 4-seed Daniil Medvedev could be on a collision course. Thiem and Medvedev battled at the U.S. Open Semifinals. Daniil entered that match the slight favorite. Thiem beat him in 5 sets.
Since that terrific match, Dominic made it to the French Open Quarterfinals where he fell to Diego Schwartzman. Although Thiem lost, it took Schwartzman 8 sets to beat him. In the first round at the Erste Bank Open, Dominic defeated Vitaliy Sachko 6-4, 7-5. Christian Garin, Dominic’s second round opponent shouldn’t keep him from moving on in the tournament.
Medvedev’s first match is at 9:00 am ET on Wednesday, October 28. Daniil takes on Jason Jung. The 4-seed has struggled since losing to Thiem at the U.S. Open. Ugo Humbert upset him at the Hamburg Open.
Marton Fuscovics knocked Medvedev out of the French Open in the first round and Reilly Opelka kept Medvedev from getting to the third round at the St. Petersburg Open. Daniil must step it up and prove he can hang with Thiem, Tsitsipas, and Djokovic.
Erste Bank Open is this week’s top tennis tournament
The Erste Bank Open should be a great tournament because four of the top men’s singles players in the world will step onto the courts. The biggest question is whether Daniil Medvedev has gotten back his game. If he hasn’t, Dominic Thiem looks like a lock to make the finals.
1-seed Novak Djokovic could face one of the few tennis players on the planet who can challenge him. If Djokovic takes on Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Erste Bank Open Semifinals, make sure to check it out. The two have battled in a couple of classics over the past few years.
MyBookie posts tennis odds as soon as they’re available. So, check back to see if the player you like is headed to the Erste Bank Open courts.
