COVID-19 Tennis Update – September 16th Edition
2020 French Open
- When: Sep. 21 – Oct. 11
- Where: Roland-Garros, Paris, France
Naomi Osaka takes U.S. Open Championship, Thiem wins Men’s Singles Title
On Saturday, Naomi Osaka won her second U.S. Open in the past three years when she beat Victoria Azarenka 1-6, 6-3, 6-3. Osaka dominated after the tough first set. She’s shown an affinity for the courts at Flushing Meadows in the past. 2020 was no exception.
It was a nice win for Naomi. She’ll head to Roland-Garros an underdog, though. At the French Open, Osaka has never escaped the third round. She bowed out in the third in the past two years. Although her odds are decent at +1400, if you back Osaka, you’re taking a chance expecting her to do something she’s never done before.
A day after Osaka won the U.S. Open Women’s Singles title, Dominic Thiem took the U.S. Open Men’s Singles Championship. It was Dominic’s first trip to a U.S. Open Final. He made the most of it.
Some will put an asterisk near Thiem’s victory. Tournament favorite Novak Djokovic got disqualified after he hit a ball behind him and struck a U.S. Open official in the neck. Entering the major tournament, Djokovic was a -300 favorite. Some will argue that his disqualification opened the door for Thiem.
That’s not fair to Dominic. Alexander Zverev won the first two sets. Thiem had to fight to stay alive. Then, in the fifth set, he beat Zverev. No matter what anyone says, Dominic earned the win on Sunday.
Simona Halep, Serena Williams, and Ashley Barty are Women’s Singles French Open Favorites
The top choice on the board to win the French Open Women’s Singles Championship is 2019 Wimbledon winner Simona Halep. Simona won the 2018 French Open. She’s comfortable over the clay courts. Before dumping on Simona, though, make sure to handicap the other players. The odds are low at +450, which means if you back Halep, you had better be comfortable doing so.
Serena offers +900 odds. Although she always has a shot, Serena looked tired in the upset loss to Victoria Azarenka in a U.S. Open semifinal match. Perhaps, Serena doesn’t have the some lung power she used to have.
Like Serena, Ashleigh Barty is at +900. Barty won last year’s French Open. She should be ready to defend her title. Among the favorites, she projects as offering the most value to win the major championship.
Rafael Nadal a -120 favorite to beat Djokovic and Thiem for the French Open title
Will anyone beat Rafael Nadal? That’s the biggest question. Nadal has won the French Open title 12 times. He’s won the French Open in the last three years. Every one knows that Rafa is the clay master.
If a player does beat Rafael, it should be either Novak Djokovic or Dominic Thiem. Djokovic won the 2016 French Open. Since then, Nadal has dominated. But, Novak should be fired up after the U.S. Open disqualification.
Dominic Thiem has never won the French Open. He has played in the finals in the past couple of years, though. If you’re looking for a player to take Rafa down, Dominic is the top player to back.
2020 French Open Tennis Championship starts on Monday, Sep. 21
In less than a week, the best tennis players on the planet throw down at Roland-Garros for the 2020 French Open. Make sure to check it out.
Only take short odds on Simona if you believe she’s close to unbeatable. Barty offers solid odds to upset Halep and Serena. On the men’s side, Dominic Thiem figures to pose the greatest challenge to clay court king Rafael Nadal.
Have a great rest of your week!
