One year after winning just four games, the San Francisco 49ers rose up to become division champs, conference title winners – and really, one of the best teams in all of football. Now, after trying for a league-high 13 wins last season and coming up just short of winning Super Bowl, the Niners will enter the upcoming 2020 campaign with some seriously high hopes of going one step further than they did a year ago – and rightfully so. Now, as they get set for the quickly-approaching 2020 NFL regular season, all eyes will be on the Niners as they attempt to become the first repeat NFC champions since Seattle pulled off the feat in 2013 and 2014 and just the second team to repeat as conference champs since Green Bay in 1996 and 1997. Let’s find out what’s in store for Frisco in 2020 so you can place your bets against their NFL odds.

San Francisco 49ers Season Betting Analysis – 2020 NFL Predictions

Offensive Outlook

San Francisco finished a fantastic fourth in total offense (381.1 ypg), a stupendous second in rushing (144.1 ypg) and equally impressive second in scoring (29.9 ppg). Running back Raheem Mostert rushed for a team-high 772 yards while averaging 5.6 yards per carry while the now departed Matt Breida added 623 rushing yards while averaging 5.1 yards per carry. Veteran Tevin Coleman added 544 rushing yards while averaging 4.0 yards per carry. The bad news is that Frisco finished a decent, but not overly impressive 13th in passing (237.0 ypg) as quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo passed for 3,978 yards with 27 TD passes but 13 costly  interceptions along the way. Pro Bowl tight end George Kittle caught 85 passes for 1,124 yards and five scores while veteran wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders added 66 receptions for 869 yards and five touchdowns. Rookie wideout Deebo Samuel hauled in 57 catches for 802 yards and three scores, but the Niners parted saw sanders walk in free agency, though they replaced him by drafting Arizona State wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk with the 25th overall pick while adding veteran wideout Travis Benjamin in free agency. San Francisco also re-signed veteran center Ben Garland while signing veteran guard Tom Compton in free agency. While the losses of Breida and Sanders will sting a bit in 2020, the Niners are expecting bigger contributions from Coleman and Mostert this coming season.

Defensive Outlook

San Francisco was phenomenal on defense last season in finishing second in total defense (281.8 ypg), first against the pass (169.2 ypg) and eighth in points allowed (19.4 ppg). The Niners did finish a modest 17th against the run (112.6 ypg), but that was likely because their opponents struggled to pass the ball. More importantly, Frisco has all of their 2019 starters back except defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, who they traded to Indianapolis for a first round pick. The San Francisco 49ers re-signed defensive end Arik Armstead to a five-year extension while re-signing veteran safety Jimmy Ward and defensive end Ronald Blair III in free agency. To replace Buckner, Frisco selected South Carolina defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw with the 14th overall pick.

The Schedule

I think it’s quite possible the Niners get off to a stellar 7-0 start by beating the Cards at home in their regular season opener, before taking out the Jets and Giants in the Big Apple the next two weeks. Home wins over the Eagles, Dolphins and Rams will follow as will a big road win at New England. I’ve got Frisco losing at Seattle before beating Aaron Rodgers and the Packers the following week. A loss at New Orleans will come after that, followed by their regular season sweep over the Rams. Frisco will then take out Buffalo and Washington at home before suffering an upset loss at Dallas. The Niners then drop their final two regular season contests at Arizona and at home against Seattle to finish at 11-5 at the very least.

The Coach

Now entering his fourth season at the helm in San Francisco, head coach Kyle Shanahan is widely regarded as one of the best offensive minds in the game today. While I won’t necessarily dispute that, I must say that Shanahan has botched his two appearances in the Super Bowl by being far too conservative. As the offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons, Shanahan let his team give up a commanding 28-3 third quarter lead in Super Bowl 51 while never scoring again in their 34-28 overtime loss against New England. Last year, Shanahan got too conservative again while blowing a 20-10 against Kansas City and again, never scoring a point after going up on the Chiefs. Shanahan is 23-25 in three years leading San Francisco the last three seasons and for me, that just doesn’t inspire a whole lot of confidence moving forward.

NFC West Division Odds -110

While San Francisco is a clear-cut favorite to win the NFC West division title over Seattle (+200), I’ve got the Niners coming up just short of winning the division title.

NFC Championship Odds +400

The Niners are also favorites to repeat as NFC champions, but again, I don’t see it happening with New Orleans (+550) being my pick to claim the conference crown.

Super Bowl Odds +1000

The Niners are the No. 3 favorite to win Super Bowl 55 after Kansas City (+515) and Baltimore (+600), but again, I don’t see it happening. The Niners have talent on both sides of the ball, but I’m going with New Orleans first and foremost, to win the NFC Championship in 2020.
