Check out an update on both the men’s and women’s side for the 2020 U.S. Open so you can make your bets against their Tennis odds!

COVID-19 Tennis Update – September 2nd Edition

Tennis Update: U.S. Open

  • When: August 30 – September 13
  • Where: Flushing Meadows, NY

ATP U.S. Open Update

The world’s top men’s tennis player easily handled his first round opponent. Damir Dzumhur fell 6-1, 6-4, 6-1 behind Novak’s backhands, forehands, and overall terrific play. Djokovic won’t face one of his chief rivals, Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal, in the finals. But that doesn’t mean he’s a lock to win the U.S. Open trophy.

4-seed Stefanos Tsitsipas also played great in his first round win. Tsitsipas dominated Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-2, 6-1, 6-1. Stefanos has held his own in five matches against Djokovic. He’s got a couple of wins while Novak has three.

5-seed Alexander Zverev, 2-seed Dominic Thiem, and 3-seed Daniil Medvedev all won their first round matches. Right now, we can’t count out any of those three, or Tsitsipas, to take down Novak Djokovic.

WTA U.S. Open Update

Serena Williams is looking for her twenty-fourth Grand Slam championship. She started out the quest beating Kristie Ahn in her first round match. Serena beat Ahn in straight sets, 7-5 and 6-3.

Serena’s sister, Venus, didn’t fare as well. The older Williams lost for the first time in her first match at the U.S. Open. Venus had won twenty-one straight U.S. Open Round 1 matches. Karolina Muchova beat Venus in straight sets 3-6, 5-7.

Serena looked strong in her win over Ahn. The tournament just started, though. 2-seed Sofia Kenin and 1-seed Karolina Pliskova also won their first round matches. So did Naomi Osaka, who loves Flushing Meadows.

Although it took her 3 sets to do it, Naomi beat Misaki Doi 6-2, 5-7, 6-2. Osaka won the 2018 U.S. Open. She lost in the fourth round at the 2019 U.S. Open. Don’t expect Noami to fall early in 2020. By the looks of it, she should challenge Serena, Pliskova, and Kenin for the championship.

U.S. Open Tennis continues into next week

The U.S. Open Tennis Tournament lasts until September 13. Because of the pandemic, no tennis player got a chance to properly prepare for the major championship. That could open the door for underdogs to bite.

Men’s singles 1-seed Novak Djokokovic has won just three U.S. Open titles. It’s a lot for any other tennis player, but Novak has won eight Australian Open and five Wimbledon Championships.

On the women’s side, 1-seed Karolina Pliskova has never won a U.S. Open. She made the finals in 2016 but lost to Angelique Kerber. Pliskova must do something she’s never done in her career in a coronavirus inflicted year.

Can Pliskova justify the 1-seed with a U.S. Open win? Will Djokovic mow through his competition? How will Serena play as the tournament goes on and is Naomi Osaka ready to step back into the tennis limelight with a major championship?

Have a great rest of your week!
