COVID concerns take a backseat to football

The NFL believes it has the right plan in place for next week’s start to the season. The National Football League is so confident that league officials are rarely discussing the coronavirus. The league appears confident that if something does come up, they will deal with it.

That’s good news! It means we can discuss how teams are preparing to win football games.

Chargers lose Derwin James for 6-to-8 months

Last week, the Los Angeles Chargers took the biggest blow. Derwin James, their talented strong safety, is having knee surgery. James will be out from 6-to-8 months.

Without Derwin, the Chargers chances of challenging Kansas City in the AFC West take a massive blow. Los Angeles has questions on offense, especially at the quarterback position, which means the team wanted to lean on their defense this season.

James is a huge part of that defense.

Saints Alvin Kamara wants a new contract

New Orleans Saints star running back Alvin Kamara hasn’t shown up to practice in the past couple of days. The reason? Alvin wants a new contract.

Maybe, he deserves a new contract, or, maybe, he doesn’t. The Saints will decide that. As far as New Orleans goes, Sean Payton has a running back by committee approach. Ty Montgomery and Latavius Murray are on the roster.

Also, Payton could use Taysom Hill, his Swiss Army Knife, at running back if Alvin decides not to show up on Sundays.

Chicago Bears HC Matt Nagy has yet to decide on a starting quarterback

This is the most interesting thing to happen this past week. Matt Nagy, the Bears’ head coach, said he’d announce a quarterback starter the week before Chicago’s first game.

The Bears declined to pick up Mitch Trubisky’s fifth-year option. Does that mean Nick Foles gets the start? Is Chicago really giving up on Trubisky?

We shall see.

Chiefs extend Andy Reid, ready to defend Super Bowl title

Kansas City extended both coach Andy Reid and GM Brett Veach to 2025. This one was a no-brainer.

After handing Patrick Mahomes a giant contract, KC had to take care of Andy and Brett. The three should ensure KC challenges for Super Bowls for the next decade.

Whether you like Kansas City or not, it’s a good thing. The Chiefs are a solid sports organization, one that does right by their employees. We should applaud franchises like the Chiefs whenever we can.

Have a great week!
