Can Tiz the Law Get that Triple Crown After last Year’s Fluke

2020 Kentucky Derby

  • When: Saturday, Sep. 5 at 6:30 pm ET
  • Where: Churchill Downs, Louisville, KY
  • Weather: Sunny

What happened in the 2019 Kentucky Derby?

Derby winner Maximum Security bore out around the stretch, causing jockey Tyler Gaffalione to pull up War of Will.

Even though Maximum Security went on to win the Kentucky Derby easily, Gaffalione contacted the stewards. After much debate, the stewards disqualified Maximum Security and placed him seventeenth, behind Long Range Toddy.

That put a sour note on what had, up until then, been a great Kentucky Derby. Maximum Security was a former claiming horse who had won the Run for the Roses.

After the Derby, the rest of the Triple Crown was boring if not downright sad. War of Will won the Preakness, the least respected of the three races. Sir Winston won the Belmont Stakes.

Although 2019 was a Triple Crown let down, 2020 is a new year. Although the Kentucky Derby takes place after the Belmont Stakes, excitement is high. The reason?

Tiz the Law looks like the best dirt horse on the planet.

Tiz the Law’s chances of winning the Derby and then the Preakness

Odds for the Kentucky Derby came on Tuesday, Sep. 1. Per the odds, Tiz the Law looks like the hand down winner.

The Law is 3/5 on the morning line. Based on those odds, it should be close to impossible for any horse to beat Tiz the Law. This is the Kentucky Derby, though, which means anything, like 2019 proved, can happen.

If Tiz the Law wins the Derby, he’s almost a lock to win the Preakness. He’s already taken the Travers Stakes and the Belmont, which makes him the 3-year-old champion unless one of his rivals beats him in the Derby and the Preakness.

That’s not likely to happen. After the Derby, most trainers will point to the Breeders’ Cup on Oct. 30 and 31.

If Tiz the Law wins the Derby, he might run against, maybe, 4 or 5 other horses in the Preakness Stakes. There’s also the chance that Tiz the Law doesn’t run in the Preakness. The Breeders’ Cup Classic happens on Oct. 31. The Preakness is scheduled for Oct. 3.

That means, the Law would have turn around in less than a month after the Preakness and try to win a $6 million dollar race against the best dirt horses in the world. Now, Tiz the Law may be good enough to do that. But there is a chance Barclay Tagg and Sackatoga Stables forgets the Preaknessand instead go for the BC Classic.

This is a unique Triple Crown year. The Belmont Stakes happened at 1 1/8 miles. If a horse doesn’t win the Belmont at 1 ½ miles, does that mean it won a real Triple Crown?

That’s the question Tagg and Sackatoga Stables must ask themselves. So, yes, Tiz the Law can win the Triple Crown. Will he depends on what happens on Sep. 5 and how much winning the Triple Crown this year means to his connections.
