Not all that long ago, the Colorado Rockies and San Diego Padres were atop the NL West Division. That’s no longer the case with the Dodgers pulling away, but the Rox and Friars are both in playoff contention. They open an important four-game series in Denver on Friday with Colorado favored on the MLB odds.

Why Bet on San Diego?
San Diego is without outfielder Tommy Pham, who is on the injured list with a fractured hamate bone in his right hand. He’s probably out the rest of the season. Pham, 32, was batting .207/.316/.293 with two homers and six steals through 23 games. In addition, closer Kirby Yates is likely done following elbow surgery.
Drew Pomeranz had taken over at closer, but now he’s on the injured list with a left shoulder strain. Padres relieves have logged 29 holds, which lead the NL and rank 2nd in MLB. San Diego’s relievers have claimed 9 wins, which tie for 3rd most in the NL.
It’s Zach Davies (4-2, 3.03) scheduled on the mound for San Diego. Davies yielded two runs over eight innings last Saturday in a win over the Astros. Davies struggled in the first inning, surrendering a double and back-to-back walks to load the bases with only one out. He managed to escape the early jam with only one run crossing the plate thanks to a Yuli Gurriel sacrifice fly.
The Padres offense supplied him with 11 runs of support over the next two innings. He recorded a season-high seven strikeouts and only issued two walks. A big lead gave him license to attack the strike zone. Of the final 24 batters he faced, he threw more than five pitches to just four. He retired 12 straight at one point and needed 95 pitches in all, allowing four hits while striking out seven.
Davies has now allowed three or fewer earned runs in each of his six starts in 2020, resulting in a solid 3.03 overall ERA. The 27-year-old righty owns a 0.84 WHIP and 31/7 K/BB ratio across 35 2/3 innings (six starts) in his Padres debut.
Davies faced the Rockies on Aug. 2 and allowed three earned runs on four hits and a walk while striking out two across five innings to take the loss. Davies was part of the Trent Grisham trade this offseason, and his fellow Brewers teammate donned him with a new nickname after his most recent start.
“He’s taken it to the next level,” Grisham said. “… He’s a technician.”
Why Bet on Colorado?
The Rockies are in the midst of playing 20 consecutive days until the Sept. 3 off day. Veterans Daniel Murphy and Matt Kemp were expected to help lead the offense. Instead, they have struggled and could be in danger of falling further on the team’s depth chart. Murphy’s slash line has fallen for a third-straight season in 2020. Some of Murphy’s decline could be pure bad luck; his BABIP is almost 40 points below its career average.
Closer Wade Davis threw a bullpen session Wednesday. It’s the first time he’s thrown off a mound since he went on the injured list at the beginning of the month with a right shoulder strain. Davis would figure to need at least 1-2 more bullpen sessions and then face hitters before he’s cleared to return.
The Rockies’ Antonio Senzatela (3-1, 3.96) was hit hard for six runs over 5 1/3 innings on Sunday to pick up a loss against the Dodgers. He allowed solo homers to Kyle Seager, Mookie Betts and Cody Bellinger, and he also allowed a three-run shot to Enrique Hernandez. Senzatela struck out just one batter and his ERA jumped from 2.90 to 3.96. Prior to Sunday, Senzatela had allowed just two homers in 31 innings. He was coming off a start where he hurled eight shutout innings against the Astros.
Senzatela has good recent memories at Coors Field against the Padres — six innings, one run, four hits, six strikeouts on Aug. 2. The only blemish on his day came on a run-scoring double off the bat of Manny Machado in his final inning of work.
Rockies 7, Padres 5
