Check out a brief early history of one of the greatest heavyweight boxers to ever fight so you can bet against their Myke Tyson odds.

Mike Tyson Boxing’s Youngest Heavyweight Champ Battles Roy Jones Jr

Mike Tyson’s Rise to the Top of the Heavyweight Division

From 58 fights, Tyson has 50 wins, 44 by knockout, 6 losses and a couple of no contests. Although the record impresses, it doesn’t do justice to what Tyson meant to boxing.

Iron Mike, his other nicknames were Kid Dynamite, and The Baddest Man On the Planet, saved the sport. Tyson brought boxing back from the brink.

The Thrilla in Manilla, Muhammed Ali and Joe Frazier’s third bout, had happened in 1975. Since then, fighters like Larry Holmes, Gerrie Coetze, Tim Witherspoon, and Pinklon Thomas had acquired one of the three heavyweight belts.

None of those fighters, not even the great Larry Holmes, had the charisma or boxing prowess that Ali and Frazier had brought to the ring.

When Mike Tyson rose to the top of the heavyweight division, the sport was in disarray. Yes, the lightweight and middleweight divisions had plenty of talent, but boxing will always be about the heavyweights.

That’s the division where Ali fought, and nobody questions that Ali was the greatest of all-time.

Check out the key points in Iron Mike’s early career, from when he won his first fight to when he unified the heavyweight division.

Mike Tyson’s early career

Mike Tyson’s boxing career starts at the age of 13. By that age, Mike had been arrested thirty-eight times.

After a final arrest, juvenile detention counselor Bobby Stewart began training Mike as a boxer. Stewart discovered how talented Tyson was. Instead of continuing to train him, Bobby sent Iron Mike to Cus D’Amato.

From there, Kevin Rooney trained Tyson. Mike had a solid amateur career but missed out on the 1984 Olympics after losses to Henry Tillman.

Tyson’s first fight was on March 6, 1985. Famous handballer and comic book collector turned boxing promoter Jimmy Jacobs, Rooney, and Cus D’Amato put Iron Mike on a crazy schedule.

Mike was so talented that he fought almost every other week. Tyson won 26 of his first 28 fights by either KO or TKO. 16 of his 26 knockouts happened in the first round.

Tyson won the WBC Championship on Nov. 22, 1986. He beat Trevor Berbick in Round 2 via TKO. Mike was just 20 years and 4 months old at the time, making him the youngest fighter to ever win the heavyweight title.

Tyson added the WBA belt after beating James Smith on March 7, 1987.

Then on August 1, 1987, Iron Mike Tyson became the first heavyweight to secure all three championship belts, the WBC, WBA, and IBF. Tyson beat Tony Tucker via unanimous decision for Tucker’s International Boxing Federation (IBF) Championship.

Tyson vs Jones Jr. – A Night for Legends

Iron Mike Tyson returns to the ring on November 28. Although now 54, anybody who has seen Mike hit the heavy bag recently knows he’s got a lot left.

In fact, he’d probably be favored over former heavyweight champs like Deontay Wilder if he were to fight one of them.

Roy Jones Jr. is no slouch, though. Jones Jr. was such a great athlete that on one Saturday, he played in a Continental Basketball Association (CBA) game before winning a championship bout.

Mark November 28 as A Night for Legends for your Mike Tyson Prop Bet. Both Iron Mike Tyson and Roy “Superman” Jones Jr., two of the greatest to ever fight, step back into the ring.
